The Belize Butterfly House
Located in the Cayo district, between limestone hills covered with lush vegetation you will find "Green Hills", the Belize Butterfly Ranch and Botanical Collections. Flocks of butterflies, from brilliant blue to gorgeous orange, dazzling yellow to intriguing gray, fly freely in 2,700 sq. ft. of beautifully landscaped flight areas: The largest live butterfly display in Belize.

The Rearing Facilities
Dozens of local butterfly species are being reared at Green Hills. Most of these will be shipped to butterfly houses in the United States where they will delight thousands of visitors. Some of these butterflies are being retained in order to maintain our own breeding stock.

The Botanical Collection
Green Hills maintains living collections of several groups of plants, amongst them Passionflower, Bromeliads, Heliconia's, Aristolochia's and orchids.

The Research Facilities
Green Hills is research orientated. The main flight area makes it possible to study interactions between different butterfly species while smaller breeding units make it possible to study individual species. 

In addition, there is ongoing research in other areas not necessarily directly related to butterflies. Both Jan Meerman and Tineke Boomsma are well known in Belize for their environmental, taxonomic and ecological studies and much attention is devoted to conservation activities.

Picnic spot
Guests of Green Hills are welcome to use our new, covered picnic spot furnished with tables and seats.

Visiting Hours
The butterfly house is open daily from 0800 - 1630 hr. Entrance fee for a guided tour is BZ$8 (US$ 4) per person (minimum of 2 people).

How to find Green Hills
Green Hills is situated at mile 8 on Chiquibul road on the way to the
Mountain Pine Ridge in Cayo District, Belize. Coming from San Ignacio,
turn right in Georgeville; follow the road until you see the sign for
"Green Hills" on your right hand side.
