Horseback Riding in a Jungle Setting ...

Horseback Riding at duPLooy's

Visitors are often surprised to see that there are so many horses in a jungle setting. Horses traditionally have been used in Belize for land-based transportation. A horse hauling poles from the jungle, tilling fields, or pulling a Mennonite wagon to market, are still common sights.

Belizean horses are relatively small,
however they are hardy and sure footed in the rocks and mud of the hillsides.

On the inland portion of any of our Travel package you will have the opportunity to explore the Cayo District on horseback through half or full-day trips offered by guides and resort operators. Everything from a simple, pleasurable ride through the Cayo countryside to more adventurous rides to Caves and Maya archeological sites.

Full-Day Horseback Outings

For riders of any level, sightseeing from the back of a horse is always fun. Where else can you ride to a cave, explore the cave and canoe downstream to your lodge, all in the same day? Or how about a ride through field and forest to the small village of San Jose Succotz, crossing the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry for your guided tour of Xunantunich Maya site. Afterwards have lunch in a local restaurant and return by horse or in a vehicle.

Or how about an hour and a half's ride through forest, field and orchard along the Macal River, then a riverside picnic followed by a leisurely float downstream in a canoe or inner tubes.

horseback riding with EmilFor more adventurous riders there is the option of adding a 40-minute hike to Flour Camp Cave with time to explore the cave before you begin your float downstream to duPlooy's beach. On your way back home there are plenty of spots to stop and take a refreshing swim. No worries - Your guide will return the horses to duPlooy's for you.

Half-Day Horseback Outings

Enjoy riding through tropical deciduous forest,
jungle trails
, meadows, open savannas, and
small subsistence farms
, while taking in picturesque views of the the Cayo countryside.

If you would like to just view the area from the back of a horse without a particular destination in mind, a half-day's nature ride on our jungle trails is what you are looking for.

Shorter Rides

Not too sure of how much time you want to spend riding? Try an hour or two's guided ride around the property. For added fun get dropped off at the riverside for a 30-45 minute downstream float by inner tube to duPlooy's beach. Arrange ahead of time to have your picnic lunch delivered to you upon arrival.

You can enjoy Horseback Riding as part of a personalized
