River Paddle
Canoeing and Tubing are Great Ways
to Experience Cayo ....
Tropical birds and giant iguanas populate the treetops, and villagers still wash clothes along the river's bank.
Macal River
Paddle a canoe down the Macal River on your own or with a Knowledgeable tour guide who will point out the different flora and fauna, birds and other wildlife along the way.
You are likely to spot basking Iguanas perched atop the jungle canopy, while passing by high-rock-wall formations, as you slowly make your way downstream. Macal River canoeing lasts 3 hours to half-day, depending on the entry point. |

Mopan River
Canoeing, Tubing or using inflatable Kayaks work equally well on the Mopan River, which has an abundance of light rapids and cascading water falls. duPlooy Travel recommends using a guide for trips on the Mopan. See a variety of birds including flycatchers, cormorants, ducks, parrots and parquets, as well as large iguanas among the tree tops and rivers edge. Mopan River Aerial View
Belize River
Canoe down the Belize River taking in exotic birds and other wildlife. See crocodiles, howler monkeys, stork and other river birds and small animals. Areas of the river are remote enough from civilization to offer an excellent opportunity to see Belize's national symbol, the rare and elusive Baird's Tapir (Mountain Cow).
Canoeing along Belize's ancient Highway is best enjoyed as part of an overnight experience. |

Another option is to combine a full-day of canoeing with Horseback Riding. Ride through open farmland and lush jungle trails, then afterwards work your way slowly down the Macal River. Stop for a refreshing swim along the way and have a chance to observe the entertaining Fruit Fish, which visitors often mistake for young Piranhas.
