Xunantunich is
located across from San Jose Succotz, a few miles from
the western border. The partially-excavated and largest
pyramid, El Castillo, rises 130 feet above the main
plaza and offers an impressive Panoramic View of the
Belize's Cayo District and nearby Guatemala.

Castillo, is known for its frieze,
a banded stucco decoration which at one time extended
around the entire pyramid.
Impressive
museum displays a three-dimensional
model of the entire Xunantunich site,
as well as depicting the evolution of
Maya civilization. Three stelae from the
site are on display. |
Getting There
....

| From San
Ignacio take Benque Viejo Road
to the Maya village of San Jose Succotz .
There a hand-cranked ferry will take you (and
your vehicle) across the Mopan River. From
there, it's about a mile uphill to Xunantunich.

daily 8-4.
San Ignacio Resort Hotel and Windy Hill Resort options include Horseback Riding along the Mopan River in route to Xunantunich or Mopan River Kayaking or Tubing, following a visit to this impressive archeological site. |
